I should start off by saying I have never been anywhere in South America so I have no idea of the ‘must see’ places to visit. This list simply covers 10 places I would love to visit one day.
- The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. This is my #1 dream destination in South America. I’ve always wanted to go and see the unique and beautiful wild life found on the islands.
- Buenos Aires, Argentina. I’m a city girl and would love to visit what I imagine is the most lively and cosmopolitan South American city. I’d like to start my South American travels in Buenos Aires and spend at least 3 months learning Spanish before heading off to explore elsewhere.
- Machu Picchu, Peru. It’s a bit of a cliché really but who doesn’t want to visit the amazing Inca ruins at Machu Picchu?
- Cartagena, Colombia. A Unesco World Heritage Site known for its cobblestone streets and cafe culture. My kind of place.
- Patagonia, Argentina. The dinosaur route. Fascinating.
- Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. This place is like Niagara Falls x 100.
- Santiago, Chili. A city with everything. It looks like it would be a great place for foodies.
- Sucre, Bolivia. Another World Heritage Site and another great walking city.
- Ouro Preto, Brazil. Baroque architecture abounds in Ouro Preto. I’d love to spend hours exploring the city on foot, even though the hills might kill me.
- Valparaiso, Chili. Valparaiso sounds like a charming city built into a hill with colourful, albeit run down, homes which look over the city. I hope it won’t be too run down for my liking.
Obviously it’s quite difficult to pick out ten places of interest considering South America is such a massive and diverse continent but it gives me a starting point as I begin researching places to visit. Where would you recommend going?
If that’s not enough, here are 5 more places to visit in South America.

This makes me want to get an airline ticket and head to South America. All those places sound wonderful! Thanks for the post.
We can dream at least
hi there,
i tried to send this message once before and it didn’t work so here’s hoping it does this time… this is a great and inspirational list, makes someone want to go visit!! thanks for taking the next 30 days to do this challenge with me!

This is just the push I need. Thanks for hosting!
Ooo, I want to visit the Inca ruins! Sounds awesome. I never travel anywhere. I pick Disney every time. I’m adventurous like that
So long as you have a good time it doesn’t matter where you go.
I’ve traveled through Bolivia, Chile and Argentina and you’ve chosen some really great spots! I pretty much loved everywhere that I visited in Argentina, especially Patagonia and BsAs. I’d love to go back someday! Great post and best of luck with 31DBB!
It’s great to hear from someone who has actually been to these places. I have a feeling Argentina will be favourite country to visit.
I look forward to reading all about Mexico on your blog.
Nice list. My only observation is that the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia needs to be on the list somewhere. There is nothing like it in the world. It’s a top 5 site in my opinion. That said, you got a great list and all the places are worthy of a visit.
Jason
I was reading about the salt flats in Salar de Uyuni and wasn’t sure if it would be that interesting but if you think it’s a top 5 destination then it must be pretty special.
Yes, this is a really good list! I’d love to go to these places. Never been to South America, but I’ve been reading a lot of blog posts about it lately. I think that I learn something new and interesting every day about SA!
I’ve been reading a lot of posts about the region too which I guess is what pushed me to put a few ideas in writing.
Ahh.. that first photo is so gorgeous! South America is amazing.
I’m sure it is
I’d also add Northern Peru, the same beauty of Machu Picchu with a fraction of the people and price.
Without the people and prices sounds good.
I’ve never been south of the border. Ever. But I was sold at the photo
I’m sure there are loads of great photo ops all over South America which is one of the reasons I want to go.
